Rogers Swivo Spurs-Trick to replacing the rubber tip?

Greetings,

I am restoring my first Rogers kit. Both bass drum spurs are missing the rubber tips, which I am replacing. It is a Swivo, hexagonal spur (See Photo 1-Not mine-found on the internet).

I assume the tension pin that goes all the way through toward the pointy end is to prevent the spur from retracting all the way so it cannot fall into the bass drum. Is that right?

Is there a tip or trick for replacing the rubber feet on these? Primarily I am concerned with the sharp tip on the spur protruding through the new rubber tip. I think the rubber feet will not go up far enough as to interfere with the tension pin. Has anyone had an issue with that?

I plan on using the basic, Gibraltar round rubber floor tom feet (see Photo 2). I'll try the small size first. They also make a larger diameter as well.

Hi V!

You are correct that the roll pin is to keep the hex rod from falling into the bass drum. The issue with the rubber "crutch tip" is two-fold; Rogers actually used a different style of rubber tips than those of Ludwig and Slingerland. Rogers-style rubber tips are physically different, in that they are both shorter in length and thicker at the bottom, which helped to keep the pointed tip of the spur from piercing through. I've attached pictures of my Rogers spurs, showing both tips. The Rogers-style is on the left. Next, look at the closeup of the Rogers tip and you should see that there is a very small washer inside. That washer keeps the pointed tip from going through the rubber. I don't believe that Rogers ever supplied these as factory parts, but are now being offered when you buy these rubber tips on eBay, etc.

Jim Petty offers the best Rogers crutch tips and washers I've seen and is what I use. Check them out at http://www.jp2creations.com/

These are what I use. Yes, they are more expensive than the generic rubber tips and washers offered on eBay, but are what I use to achieve a more period-correct look for my Rogers drums!

amosguy is correct that you really only need this small washer, inserted into the rubber tip, to keep the pointed spur from going through the rubber. Just go down to your local hardware store and get some small washers that will fit into your rubber tips. I'll admit to being very anal when it comes to all my drums and strive to use the same style that came with them!!
