Rogers Swivo-Matic Collet Issue

There is probably a former thread on this topic, but I don’t seem to have a knack for properly searching the website.

I have older Rogers drums with an early Swivo-Matic mount. When I tighten the collet just enough to grip, the collet nut becomes extremely difficult to loosen. I tried dabs of oil (both 3-in-1 oil and a wax-based liquid oil) with no apparent improvement. I’m assuming that there is sufficient wear on the threads to cause this problem and that brand new parts would solve the problem.

Has anyone developed an effective way of dealing with this issue short of full replacement?

Have you tried swapping a different collet to see if it's the same issue? Take a close look at the threaded post and see if 1 section is slightly bent out of place. I have had to bend these on occasion to even them out. They could be bent out a bit too much. When I was putting my set together I had all oddball parts. Took a little time to fit and adjust them to play nice together. I had to bend some of the threaded posts out a bit so the collet would loosen nicely after I tightened it. They get compressed inward and you have to over tighten them to hold. Take the mount off the shell. This makes it a little easier to work on, diagnose and fit. Good luck! BTW you don't have cast collet noses do you? Those can crack and need to over tighten to work

My advice take tighten cross bar off, Check treads on the col let and on the tightening cross check for stripping treads, also clean treads with tooth brush or any wire brush that fits in treads. Chrome partials get jammed in treads and cause this problems.

If damaged treads Replace. If OK put grease DO NOT put oil it heats up and damages treads. That should fix the problem.

Glenn, I did as you suggested and Voila! The amount of inward bend was barely noticeable visually, yet tweeking them ever so slightly outward did the trick.
