Rogers Bass Drums Legs - Need Advice

Loading...

Rogers Experts: I just picked up a Rogers red-onyx Londoner kit and the bass drum legs will NOT go into the bass drum. I opened the threaded (split) part and pushed the leg in but it will only go in about an inch and then stops dead with a solid "thud." The person I purchased the kit from says that ALL Rogers legs are the same and he cannot understand why the legs will not go in. Is it true that ALL legs are the same or is it possible that the legs that came with this kit are the wrong ones? I also have a problem with the bass drum "T" mount for the double tom toms - one tom tom holder fits all the way down inside the "T" mount, the other tom tom holder only slides down about half way and stops with a solid thud. Could it be that one tom tom holder is not the correct one for the kit (both holders LOOK the same but obviously are not because one fits fine, the other does not)? All help will be appreciated - I am perplexed at this point and cannot set up the kit! Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Try cleaning the threaded part well with WD-40, making sure there's no gunk in the threads. I had a similar issue with a tom mount. Once I cleaned it well, I was able to get it to open up that little extra the mount needed to fit. Hope it helps!

Thanks for your reply. I am able to "open up" the threaded part sufficiently however, the spur (leg) will only go into the threaded part about an inch or so and then it stops dead, as if it is hitting an obstruction of some kind. A visual inspection reveals NO obstruction so I cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. (This is happening with BOTH bass drum spurs and ONE tom tom holder on the bass drum "T" mount - the holder will only go down into the threaded part on the T mount about an inch and stops, the other tom tom holder drops all the way down - I tried both sides and the one that fits goes all the way down, the one that does not, stops half way down on both sides).

I did however, stumble across this exchange on another forum, which speaks about different "machining" in California versus other machining and that some hardware may be slightly "fatter" than others [7/16 vs. 3/8] - (generational differences), causing parts not to fit properly (older collets / NEW hardware), if the original kit was retrofitted, updated, etc. which is apparently the case with MY kit that I just got. There is even a suggestion to "file down" leftover "ridges" (from the machining process) inside the collet on older versions, to allow the newer (fatter) hardware to fit properly.

Any advice on this matter or help getting the "correctly fitting" hardware (two bass drum spurs and two tom tom holders for the "T" mount), will still be appreciated. The person who sold me the kit says that everything on it is "Dayton" era as far as he knows (but obviously there is a mismatch with the spurs and tom tom holders). Here is the link regarding the "hardware" issues:

Thanks to all again!

Its possible you have replaced collets on the BD. Try putting those spurs in one of the tom collets. I have three kits with Cleveland/Dayton era hardware. 1964 Cleveland, 1966 Dayton, and one that is a mix of uncertain era Dayton/Cleveland Pat Pend mounts. The spurs that came with the mix arent interchangable throughout. They arent Fullerton, but most likely earlier cleveland.

Hi. In reading the other forum, it was noted that the "variation" in hardware was 7/16" vs. 3/8" - since the spurs don't fit, I am assuming that I must have been given 7/16 hardware and NEED 3/8? I don't have the spurs or tom tom holders as I sent them back to the seller for review and replacement however, in researching this issue, it seems that I may be experiencing the dilemma of size variation. The spinners on the collets for the bass drum spurs as well as the tom tom "T" bar all say "PAT PENDING" on them. Again, I am assuming that they therefore need the smaller 3/8" hardware and not the later versions that apparently were increased in size to 7/16. Anyone can confirm my hypothesis on this?? Thanks again to all!
