Rogers B&B lugs

Loading...

Hey Guys.. Jim Petty has several of his STEEL B&B replacement lugs that need to be on YOUR old Rogers drums!! I am "involved" in the production of these lugs. I know that many of you have seen them on EBay.. because there have been a LOT of hits on the auctions.. perhaps many of you think, as did one caller Jim heard from, that there is a HUGE profit in these lugs at $20.00 each... well, guess what.. there ain't.. it isn't 1960, and we didn't produce 25000 of them to get a 'unit cost' that is low.. believe me, they would be cheaper if the costs were lower!! Just getting the tooling (dies) done to stamp these things out would give you indigestion! We never expected to actually make $$ on the deal, just make enough to on the small lugs to get a start on the large BD lugs!

Jim got a really tacky call a while back, caller accused him of EXHORBITANT profit.. that these things couldn't cost more than a couple of dollars to make.. !! Jim didn't take too well to the accusations... but I dont think he bothered to give the caller a lesson in machine work costs, steel costs, stamping costs, plating costs and polishing costs... oh yeah, and drilling costs. He did give him a new viewpoint in calling people.

Well, I wish it were true.. that they only cost a couple of dollars to make. then they would be a LOT cheaper. These are the only choice out there in any quantity that are true to the originals.. only in steel, which will last a LOT longer than the original drawn brass.

Pass the word around, get those old B&B drums off the shelf and back into the gig bags!!

Moderators... if this is a blatant violation of policy... take it down!! it's late at night and I'm at school (teaching)...

Thanks!!

Interesting topic. We,ve all noticed how many builders are doing it themselves these days, hundreds upon hundreds all over the world buying the same shells thanks to Keller, and all identical hardware.Remember they are all competing for what ever is left of the pie.Unless they are building a Rogers drum for specific reasons, how could they be competitive when the lugs alone on a 10 hole shell would cost 200.00 per side??.Most of these bldrs are happy to get between 3-400 for a completed drum just to move them along and finance the next shell.I think you guys are going to have to settle for the straglers bringing in the old real mcCoys.I agree the costs are enormous for you but unless your replacing one or two lugs,i cant see these lugs moving quickly at all.Just to give you a comparriso i just bought 25 Lud Classic snare lugs, slightly used for 3 bucks each.A 20 lugger will cost me 60 bucks and that i can live withWelcome

Fatboy46!

Well, I am the Moderator of this board and your post is fine... after all, this IS the FOR SALE section! Now, having said that,

I know Jim Petty EXTREMELY well! I also know his work is FIRST CLASS, top of the line. As far as his "price" for the steel/chrome B&B lugs being too high, outrageous, out of line, etc... well, quality costs. Period. I mean,

Where is anyone going to find NOS B&B lugs that WON'T eventually crack under use? You can't... it's that simple. If someone actually wants to play/use their vintage Rogers snare drum that is PRE Beavertails, Jim's repros are the way to go... and again... quality costs.

Wayne mentions just having bought some Ludwig Classic snare drum lugs for $3.00 apiece, slightly used. GREAT!! And that's an excellent and typical price for those... they also don't crack under normal/intended use. Plus, the Ludwig lugs are ubiquitous... they're everywhere. Sorry for the slight redundancy! Again, the Rogers B&B lugs that won't eventually crack/fail don't exisit... until now that is... and Jim Petty makes them.

I have a 1963 Rogers COB 7 line Dynasonic that has of course, the B&B lugs. I WANT to play/gig with this drum... the sound of this particular drum is extremely bright/articulate, but the lugs are indeed hairline cracked... not all of 'em, but enough to warrent replacement if I want to actually play/gig the drum. I will replace them... and I will use Jim's B&B repros. I mean jeeze, it's a $1000.00 PLUS drum right now... what's a couple hundred more to return to full playability? Pricey? I suppose.. but worth it to return a beautiful sounding/looking drum to service, which is what it was intended for in the first place.

I never made a whole lot of money playing drums, so I got an MBA from the University of Chicago and took an economics course or two. If Jim was making a very large profit and the the lugs indeed cost a couple of bucks to make, then someone would undercut his price profitably. Then the next guy would do the same. The price would decline to a level at which the profit margin was worth the time for all market participants. Under this condition either Jim would either lower his price or opt to sit with inventory he could not sell and cease making lugs. The only possible evidence of Jim's prices being too high would be the widespread availability of lower priced/same quality lugs. Since this is not the case, Jim's prices are not too high.

Fact.

Gary

This is exactly the reason I pass on B&B drums.

Gotta agree with you there Ploughman! I only own ONE B&B Rogers drum... my 1964 COB 7 line/Clockface Dynasonic. The MAIN reason for that drum being in my collection is... Buddy! It's part of my Buddy Rich snare drum collection.

Buddy Rich was known to trot out a COB Dynasonic on occasion, and I have a couple pics from the early 60's with him playing a pre Beavertail COB Dynasonic. That was that... I knew I would have to add this drum into the collection... once I found a NICE ONE... which I eventually did. But, imagine that... cracked B&B's! Jim Petty to the rescue!

This drum is in line for re-fit of the B&B's using the jp2creations B&B's. I will of course keep the original casings, as they will go with the drum, but now, it becomes a useable instrument, as well as a collectible. Otherwise,

ALL Beavertails for me too!

I,d love to build up one of my shells but at 400 bucks for lugs i,d have to keep it forever. No chance to ever sell it,but it would look unique.Does Jim do repro Rogers throw offs?Hmmmm

Hey wayne!

Jim doesn't make a Rogers throw/strainer... yet anyway. You never know with Jim though! Actually, through MANY conversations with him I found out that it comes down to demand... what parts guys WANT/NEED. Jim is making the parts right to the ORIGINAL Rogers specs. They are almost as NOS... but of course you can't call them that. And again,

None of this R&D/machining/fabricating comes cheap. It's just the way it is today with costs on everything! Have a look around his site Wayne. He makes some really neat stuff... some of it near impossible to find anywhere... or if you do find it, you're going to pay! :-) Here's the address: www.jp2creations.com

you have to look at the other side of the coin as well B&B lugs are not as popular as Beavertails ,but if you want to have that older kit then JP is a heaven send and quite frankly 20.00 a piece for a item that will last for as long as you play the drum is a bargin, how many B&B originals will you buy before you soon spend that 400.00.. anyway some of his cymbal stands are a bargin too it is just a matter of if you want quality or a beat up old piece for the same price ,i am going to do some business with JP cause i play my drums i want quality..D' Drummer D' Drummer Party

Thx for the info,i just looked over his site and i see where he has those little things that you just cant find anywhere. That is real good to know, and i wouldn,t mind paying 8 bucks for a certain bolt or a screw size...I wonder how much it would cost though to complete the B&B lugs if you did want to build a drum using them?
