Here we go again. This drum was sent to me by drumhack. It is a 1961 Slingerland 7" x 15" snare drum. Thats right, 15" diameter, well actually
14 13/16 or 14 7/8 measuring 90 degrees from each other. It appears to be a 3 ply, mahogany inside and out, I assume poplar between and maple re-rings. There wer two extra holes near the strainer, I patched them up with some wood filler, I will do my best to make them go away.
The finish came off pretty easy and now I have a mahogany shell that looks pretty good, a little rough but with some stain and shading addative under a nice coat of gloss, this thing should come out stunning. Drumhack has picked out a color from Minwax, Sedona red. My finish supplier and color studio can make any minwax color, they are just amazing people.
Anyway, off to work now!
Oh, and almost forgot. This drum appeared to have been re-finished at one point, the grommet was all chewed up like someome had removed the badge. My guess is someone thought that putting several coats of polyurathane would be really nice. Those cracks indicate a finish that was way to thick, so if your going to do this yourself, be careful not to build the finish to thick!
