restoring a late 50's sonor 'the new beat' teadrop

Loading...

Ok, it's been a 'little' while since I posted an update... I had some things going on in life, with the teardrop having the least priority, but... I restarted the restoration some weeks ago:-)

I started working on the shells, trying to get them less 'pee-like' yellow, and more shiney. I read somewhere about this retroBright method, and inspired by that, I am using some peroxide 12% hear cream in combination with novus 3-2-1.

The 13" tom is finished by now (well, the wrap is), and I am very pleased with the results! It was some trial-and-error (f.e. never put your drum covered in peroxide more than 2hours in the sun; be really really carefully with novus 3, as if you apply it incorrectly, you will end up with way more work than you started with (ask me), etc). Anyway, here are some pictures, judge for yourself!

Currently, I am also restoring the cracks in the bass drum wrap, more pictures to follow! Could be within another year-and-a-half, but I hope sooner:-)

tom and floortom covered with peroxide, wrapped up in plastic and resting in the sun:

That's an incredible result so far! Peroxide, huh...great idea. I'm also pleased you are saving the original wrap because even the very best re-wrap is just nowhere near as cool as original wrap, even with major imperfections...IMHO.

Wow big difference. I too can't wait to see these finished. The script logo of the 50's are my favorite and it's so cool you have the original bass head. I believe those red logo's were all hand painted back then.

Good work so far,

Gary.

Again a small update: 13" and 16" toms are finished (wrap with novus and inside with bee wax), but the 20" bass drum is giving me headache. I firstly glued all the cracks and then did the peroxide treatment, but that in turn resulted in another few small cracks. I am trying to glue them, but they are small and difficult to do... (see the pictures).

As I am afraid the cracks will re-open in the future: does anyone know any solution for this? I am thinking about a few coats of clear lacquer (spray) to seal the cracks, but don't know if it will stick to the wrap. Anyone any ideas? All input is appreciated!

And thanks for the kind words so far!

It's been a while since I posted here, but some 3 years ago I finished my teardrop set. It's been in storage with my parents during the construction of my house (and living in a too small place for wife child and drums...), but in the next few weeks, they will come home!

in meantime, some pictures from 2 years ago:
