Resonant head tension for max "snare" sound

Loading...

I'm trying to get the maximum "snare" (snare wires) sound. I have heard some differing opinions as to the appropriate amount of tension of the resonant head in order to achieve a very snarey sound. Some say the reso head should not be too tight or else the snare wires won't ride into the head well but I've also heard the opposing view, that the reso head needs to be pretty tight to get more snare sound.

In your opinion, how loose/tight should my resonant head be tensioned?

I tension mine tight, but if you push a finger into it,it still has some give............

I tension mine firm, but like as said above, where it still has some give to it. Tensioning of the snares properly has a lot to do with it too......

Fairly tight as well, but not *too* tight. I also occasionally tension my snare head REALLY loose, JAW-tuning, which gives a fat and yet drier sound--more of a "splat" than a "snap". Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a good sonic option when working in the studio...

Just tight enough to smooth the wrinkles by the beds, plus a little. Evans has a little video on their site (look under snare heads) you might want to check out - I don't know how to add links, sorry.

Good luck.

Thinner snare heads also equal more "snareyness".

True about thin heads ... all of mine are clear Diplomat snare sides.
