Replicating Ludwig thermo gloss maple

Loading...

Hey all-

I am looking for a 12" tom to finish my Ringo Rooftop kit once and for all. I feebly bought a 1971 faded silver sparkle tom to refinish but it has a mahogany outer ply. Does anyone know which era Ludwig tom would have a Maple outer ply? I can't seem to find a duco 12" tom that is not a club date because I know those can be stripped. Thanks much, here are a couple pictures of the 13" tom I am trying to match. Is what I have below a veneer wrap over mahogany? Any response would be gladly appreciated, thanks!

Brendan

Your layup looks to be an outer veneer of wood -

with the basic Mahogany/Poplar/Maple and maple re-ring (moving from exterior to interior).

Hard to say which lay-up will be exactly what you're looking for as there was some inconsistency with Ludwig. I have some shells from the supposed maple/poplar/maple timeframe and the are actually maple/poplar/mahogany (interior to exterior layup).

I have used Super-lube on a couple of Speedkings. I covered the springs in Super-lube grease (not excessively, but still) and applied a sensible amount of Super-lube oil to the ball bearings.
