Replacement wires for Jazz and Pioneer

Loading...

Hi

I could use some help, please

Here is the situation, I have a Ludwig 68 Jazz Fest and a 66 Pioneer, both have Remo coated ambassadors heads, the shells are the same the only different being the 8 vs 6 lugs.

I would like to replace the snare wires to match any suggestions ?

The plan is to tune the jazz up and pioneer down.

Thanks

I would recommend using the PureSound 20 strand wires you can buy through the bay or Guitar C. I typically use those if the drum I acquired has cheap MIJ replacements and is going to get played. If you are a purist, then you can search for and get original Ludwig wires (the ones with the clear plastic end caps) Unfornutalety they can be tough to find in great condition as they usually have 1-2 strands that have been stretched. The PureSound wires work great. Another option would be Snappi or Canopous snare wires, also available through dealers on the Bay.

Snappi's are closer in the -gauge of the wire- to the originals...

Try ebay... keep checking in until you find a 20 strand set. They do come up for sale, you just have be patient. Hard to do I know... but that's the deal with some vintage stuff. Hunt and seek...

Put an ad in the Wanted section. 20 strand Snappi snares. You can also contact Mike Curotto, he deals in a lot of old, hard to find parts. The last set I bought I got from a forum member. It was a brand new set of vintage Snappi snares in a package that had never been opened. Never hurts to try... ask.

Are you saying that you want to find period-correct wires, or just the same new wires for each drum?

I'm also not finding any such thing as "Snappi" brand wires. I do know that wires were often referred to as "snappy" wires. I've used generic wires in different styles and also Puresound. The Puresound wires are a bit darker sounding, but good wires. If you just want to experiment for cheap, get a set of these MIT wires from Drum Factory Direct. They are the exact wires that Ludwig has been using for many years now, but just don't have the "Ludwig" logo on them. They are bright sounding wires and work well on many drums... https://www.drumfactorydirect.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_104_374_75&products_id=2437

One step up, you can try these... https://www.drumfactorydirect.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_104_374_372&products_id=2449

BTW, I've found that 16-strand wires sound every bit as good as 20-strand.

Hi Mark

Of course if I could find what John found (NOS) that would be great, but needing two sets it won’t likely happen. I had never heard of snappi before, the reason for my question.

I spent a bit of time today educating myself about wires, I watched a pretty good video today of Russ Miller talking about the new Vic Firth, vintage snappy wires. I have no problem paying for what will give me the best results.

Thanks for your help

P.S. love the snare, it’s everything you said it was.

Glad you like the Pioneer! There are so many brands of snare wires to choose from! Good luck on your quest to find the right ones. Kinda like a Goldielocks..."this set is too bright...this set is too dark...this set is just right!"
