Repair/mod for Rogers Blackjack beater

I had an extra blackjack beater in my parts bin, minus the spring and e-clip. I used some clear flexible tubing that fit tightly over the beater shaft and cut a piece to approximate length to fit under the beater head, just a little longer than where the e-clip groove is. Put the beater head in place, then work the piece of tubing up the shaft so it’s tight under theneater head. A little bit of silicone grease helps. If the tubing is just a little bit over the e-clip groove, you can just push it down until you can get the e-clip in place, and there you go. It should fit nice and tight with no play at all. You do lose the ability to switch back and forth from the felt side to the plastic side, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices. As for the plastic side of the beater head, that was a little too “plasticky” for me, so I used some carpet tape to stick a patch of soft leather to it. Works for DW beaters, too. It mellows out the impact, but still gives more attack than the felt side.
