Hello, I just joined this forum to learn about how to properly take care of vintage Gretsch drums. I own a 24" single-tension Broadkaster bassdrum in Blue/silver duco from 1952. It has some splits in the inner ply and I can use some advice on how to repair or take care of the drum to insure no further damage is done by further drying out of the shell. I searched the web and all the information on polishing, oiling inner plys is so conflicting that I decided to ask the people who know: vintage drum collectors. I've read about using tung oil, linseed oil, walnut oil, even olive oil. But I've also read never to use any oil based products as the plys will separate. I've also read about using pledge and other supermarket furniture polishes, but I would prefer a non-toxic substance to take care of my drums. Can/should I use woodfiller or glue in the splits, or just leave them alone? Any advice will be much appreciated. I have added a picture so you can see what I am going on about.
