Repairing a dent in a drum

Loading...

I have a 1967 ludwig super classid silver sparkle snare I purchased at a pawn shop last week. It had 2 extra holoes and a dent. Looks like it must have been dropped and landed on the muffler knob, therefore knocking a dent in the wrap and shell. I am in the process of repairing this. I have done this before on a black panther floor tom and it turned out perfect. I hope this one does the same. Here are some pics of the process. 1st pic inside shell an outtie, second pic outside shell, an innie. I put a small s

To begin this process I got me a small sponge and soaked the damaged area for a few hours. I put a piece of tape on the outside to keep the moister in the shell. I did this to soften the wood so It will be much more pliable when I clamp it.

In the meantime I rounded up what Im going to need to do this. I got my roll of entertainment industry tape out. My titebond wood glue was all dried up so I went to the store to get some more. At the store I found this Titebond Hide Glue. I was intregued and got some as well as regular wood glue. The hide glue said "excellent for misical instrument repairs". A long reach C-Clamp, A Syringe, a lil hook tool, a small piece of a 14" shell and a small piece of wood with heavy rubber glued to one side of it. The rubber side has a groove cut in it. This groove is for the excess glue to run out, otherwise the excess glue might get all over the inside of the shell.

I didnt take pics of squirting the glue. The Hide glue was extremly thin so I just used the regular wood glue that I am familier with. I had the outside of the shell taped and squirted the glue into the holes of the muffler and muffler screw. Got my tiny hook tool and hooked the glue all under the repair area. I got a piece of wax paper under the curved shell piece and taped it over the repair area. Removed the tape covering the outside hole, Then taped the other piece of wood with the rubber, with groove on the outside of the shell. Got me clamp and clamped down on it. All the excess glue ran right out of the little groove I cut in the protective rubber.

Now I sit and wait till morning and see how it turned out!!!

Truth is, I have this 9 piece silver sparkle 1969 Ludwig kit I am planning on restoring the interiors of the shells that have been painted and some painted twice. I am actually stalling to keep from doing this monumental task. I just got the silver sparkle snare and decided to fix it. I already had another one so I decided to fix it also.
