I ran into this same situation with a 4 ply chrome over wood Ludwig snare. It had already been unwrapped when I got it. That outer piece of maple is only so thick. I sanded the best I could. But it was still somewhat visible. After I did the finish work on the wood, it didn't really stand out all that bad in the end. I used tung oil on the maple.

Goo gone or goof off works.

On mine, the tape, glue and any residue was already gone. It had simply penetrated the maple and left the marks.

Try this:

I used to swear by Lighter Fluid (always worked better than Goof Off or Goo Gone). Now I swear by this stuff. It's easy to use in a spray bottle and actually smells pleasant. Stuff works miracles!
