Removing the wrap from Rogers "Big R" set

Loading...

Well, the wraps on a couple of drums in my 1976 Rogers "Big R" set have finally started to crack. Because of this I'm starting to look at my options for refinishing. The biggest question I have is how difficult it is to remove the old wrap. How securely glued are the wraps on the Big R series? Are they just glued along the edges or over the entire surface? Will using a heat gun be enough to remove the wraps cleanly, or will they probably require a heavy sanding afterwards? Certainly the older Dayton-era wraps bordered on impossible to remove without major damage, but by the mid 70s, Rogers level of craftsmanship was somewhat compromised. Anyone have any experience in this area?

Heat gun will work fine, just take your time keep it moving because you can start the wrap on fire.Once the wrap is off you have a big job of cleaning the glue off. I used lacquer thinner to remove the glue but there are better ways so I hear. The ones I did were XP8's , 8 ply maple shells that had many seems horizontally and vertically so staining the shells is not the best idea. Plan on new wrap or veneer them like I did. Would love to follow the process when you get going on them.

Thank you!

Thanks, guys. That's just what I needed to know. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do, yet. The cracking is not really bad at this point, but once it starts, it seems like it goes downhill pretty quickly. I will post when I have decided.
