Removing slight scratches

I'm putting together a bop kit from Mapex Pro Ms. I bought a 14 x 7 tom (to go with the 12 x 6) on ebay. Great drum, but the finish is slightly scratched, as though someone used a cloth that was scratchy. The scratches are on the surface only.

I know there are car polishes designed to remove fine scratches -- would something like that work? Any other ideas??

I'm kind of surprised no one has any tips n' tricks. Maybe a wood refinishing forum?

I didn't mean to sound snarky when I wrote that -- I just figured someone else would have encountered that.

But another thought occurred. I don't know what kind of finish is on there - a lacquer clear coat over a stain (Transparent Midnight Black)? If so, could I finish with 2000 wet sand and re spray, as mentioned in another post?

I just sent an email to Mapex asking what kind of finish....

Sounds smart....

It's difficult to photograph because they're small. They're like 'swirl marks' you see on a car's finish.

The larger scratch in the picture is not what I'm talking about -- I doubt there's a polish that would take it off, but who knows?

I'm willing to try wet sanding, respraying, etc, but I'm hoping a hand polish would work.

Thanks for the reply!

Yikes! That's huge! Now that I look at it, the larger scratch may be a reflection.

Try clicking on the link for a more manageable view.

Okay, the monster image is gone.

It's actually a 14 x 7. The other tom for the kit is 12 x 6. There's a 16 x 14 kick, and another 14 x 12 that doubles as a floor tom or a tiny bass. Lotta fun
