Removing glue from my drum wrap?

Loading...

Some previous owner glued down the corners of the Blue/Olive badges on a Ludwig kit with the original red wrap. It has crystallized or was Super Glue? Is there a safe way to remove the glue without damaging the wrap? I removed the badges as they were mangled beyond repair. Thx

Is the residue on top of the wrap or has it damaged the layers? Pic will help here.

Thanks,

Creighton

Nothing special here but I like them.

Warm water or acetone with both soften and break down old super glue. Use a Q tip to apply and soft plastic putty knife or old credit card as scraper. Acetone can melt/damage some wraps. So careful! Try the warm water first. It takes time. You can use a razor blade but VERY lightly and apply water to help float the blade on the surface. I use a wet paper towel to apply moisture when doing this For other adhesive types there are citrus based removers which work well. I've removed some weird types of gunk and adhesives with the water and scrapers. Harsh chemicals are not needed in most cases.

Maybe a stiff razor blade with gentle pressure, then wipe off powder with nail polish remover.

Well some of the glue scrapped off using the hot damp cloth method. Haven't used any nail polish remover as I seem to remember it dulls the old plastic wrap from a previous attempt to remove some substance from an old Ludwig shell. So at least the surface is smoother now. Does anyone have 3 nice pointy badges with either no serial numbers or ones from late 1969 into 1971? I would want the numbers to be reasonably close like the badges that came on this kit. This is a players kit with clean chrome but scuffs on the drums and a crack in the bass drum wrap about 6" long out from the double tom mounting base so I don't want to pay eBay asking prices for badges. If I can't find any badges at a reasonable price I will likely sell the kit.

I don't care for the look of the repro badges, so not going down that road.
