Refinishing a Slingerland Rolling Bomber

Hi there,

First post - hello everyone!

I've tried to cure my vintage-addiction but decided to give up ;-)

I've spotted a Slingerland Rolling Bomber that I plan to buy. It's in good shape but the original wrap was replaced by a white laquer.

Question: what would it take to refinish it in natural wood? What kind of wood was used for the external ply? I guess it's Mahogany?

Now, this white is as close at it can get to the original pearl oyster finish, so I want to make sure that this refinishing would be worth the effort.

Mine are original white lacquer. Are you sure yours are re covered?

They came in at least 2 lacquer finishes. One a two tone.

The owner told me that he bought it wrapped but the wrap was in a too bad condition to be kept so he had the drums refinished in white, which is fine.

I'm just wondering if there would be a possiblity to make that wood shine!

By the way, look at your hoops: the inlays are wrap and not paint. I guess yours was refinished, too?

Hi pask74,

Regarding your Rollling Bomber snare, slingerland NEVER produced ANY bomber drums finished in "white laquer".

All war-time drums were either :-

(wraps)

White Marine Pearl

Black Diamond Pearl

(Duco)

Black/Silver/Black

Brown/Gold/Brown

Blue/Silver/Blue

A point to also note; no matter what finish you ordered I.E. any of the above, ALL DRUMS came with White Marine Pearl inlays on the hoops.

They look strange with the other finihses but that's how it was.

I haven't seen any other original Slingerland war-time drums in any other original colours.

Thats an easy one. Strip the hardware off the drum, remove the white with paint stripper, sand it smoothe any varnish it. There's your natural wood finish.

Is the wrap (vs paint) altering the shell's sound?
