Real Floor Tom versus Hanging Floor tom

Loading...

Depends on the mounting system, I think. When Ludwig was big on their Modular Hardware system, I've seen pictures of a few pairs of 18" and 20" floor toms hanging off a single Modular stand.

Yes, they didn't flop around so much with the Modular hardware, but the sound was completely dead. You got more resonance out of Ludwig floor toms when they were mounted on legs rather than hanging from those huge castings.....I should know, I still have a kit with rack toms with those mounts. Indestructable, yes. Resonance with them? Not so much. You have to position the toms just right to get any semblance of resonance out of them, and usually that is at funny angles. I'm glad Ludwig went back to the "classic" mounting style. I always thought the modular system was way overkill.

Thanks for the info! I've seen pics of a few different pairs of those (either 16" and 18" or 18" and 20"), but had never seen or played any in person.

I like my floor toms the way I like my women- with legs.

I just opened up a volley for an array of inappropriate jokes here.

Carry on.

This thread is interesting, because in recent years, many of the major drum companies have switched a lot of their drum sets to shorter depth hanging floor toms. A lot of sets seen stock with 14" and 16" hanging floor toms (usually with some kind of isolation mount) vs. the more commonly seen stock sets with 16" and 18" floor toms with legs that everyone made in the years before. Now, why do you think this has been the case lately?

Floor tom's have legs. Hangers are for clothes...

From thisbright14

I agree with this statement except for the grammar.

Okay, Okay...

Floor tom's have legs. Hangers are for clothing...

Better? ;)

No, sir. Your punctuation is wrong. "Toms" here should not have a possessive apostrophe between the m and s. Besides, hangars are for airplanes.

I don't like my drums to bounce.

Nothing better than three nicely shapped legs.
