Questions about Ser #'s 1966 Ludwig

Loading...

Greetings , I am a 50yr old Guitarist guitar3 that always seemed to have a drum set around. Mostly for friends to play while i played guitar or bass.

In 90's I acquired a 1966 Ludwig " Black diamond pearl " set 20/13/16 chrome 14 snare.

Long story short , Job situation for wife and self have taken turn for worse.

Now i need to sell these drums. My question is regarding serial numbers , should they all match to increase value or doesnt make difference ?

This is my first post , first time on your forum . Enjoyed the info on cleaning and resto. Dont need to make a killing but need good return on investment.

My wife Lori was setting up an Ebay account so might go that route.

Gonna clean em up and post some pix , Any interest ? What should i touch and what should i leave alone. ? Is there value in hardware (hi hat, cymbal stand , etc )

Thanks Robbo:Snow Flake:

welcome robbo. if you can get us some pics even before you do anything with them, we can tell you more that might help you. most all of the items from that era have some decent value. a set that originally came together will be worth more than orphans in most all cases.

Hey, Welcome to the forum!

I guess I may be splitting hairs here, but if your concerned about having a set with consecutive serial numbers, it rarely (if ever) happened. Serial numbers on sets usually were fairly close to each other, but could be seperated by several hundred digits (or more).

I'd bet your set was always a set. One good way to tell would be to check one of the online serial number charts (one is on the sister-site, under "Vintage Drum Guide" in the "Visit our Partner Web Sites" above). When you look at the range of numbers used during specific time periods, you can usually make a pretty good judgment whether-or-not they are close enough to be a set.

I had a Hollywood set of Ludwigs once (that I REALLY wish I had held on to!) that all I did was clean it up and "flip" it. The serial numbers were close, all falling in the 1969 category. 3 of the drums had B/O badges, but one tom had a keystone badge! But, I'm convinced that's the way it came from the facotry.

Like Mike said, pics will be nice. And you will get a good idea of value from the members here. A lot of us are pretty good guys and willing to help!

as long as there with in the year time frame ,a 3 month window is great but the year is most important that's. me 2cents

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Ok guys , putting up some pix of drums before i take them all apart and start cleaning and polishing. will have to reread the info on drum cleaning again. Walking I know the 2 cymbals are Zildgans , but unsure about hi hats . want to verify dates on inside and take pix of that. appreciate the help I've received so far. Any idea on values , anything i could do wrong and adversely affect value ??

I'm brand new to this forum, but I suggest setting up a free account on flickr or photobucket dot com. I'm cleaning my '67 Ludwig WMP Downbeat set and posting "before", "progress" and eventually "after" photos here as an example.
