Question on Rogers kit w/ Dynasonic COB snare

Loading...

Hey guys,

Got this super clean looking kit into our shop on consignment a little while back and had a few questions as to dating and identifying the model. I have very little knowledge on Rogers stuff, so hoping to get some help.

It is a 12/13/16/22 with a 14x5 COB Dynasonic. The serial numbers from smallest drum to largest are D22999, D108308, D106524, D106017 and the snare is 25461. It seems the interiors and even the bearing edges differ slightly on these.

I'm interested in possibly making an offer on the snare by itself.

It has a Yamaha straight cymbal stand, but hoping the original hat stand and kick pedal (missing beater).

There are several forum members who are much more qualified to determine this, but I think you may have a transition period kit from the early to mid 70s with an earlier 70s version snare. They are known as "Big R" drums and followed the Swivomatic era. One of them has the older style shell with reinforcement rings while the others have the later 70s shell design. The snare looks great and is probably worth at least $350 by itself. The other drums seem to fetch about $700-$900. There should be more folks chiming in soon :)

Looks like a Londoner set up that is missing the original 12 inch tom. The drums with the clear interiors are Rogers XP-8 all maple shells. Great sounding drums. The white wrap is not very desirable but it is clean. I would say with out the snare and the 12 inch rack not being original $400.00 to $500.00 for the kit.

It is sad to say but as beautiful as that kit is, and even with the snare drum you are looking at $500-700 max on the kit. I had a Rogers six piece Londoner 7 (without snare) that was in immaculate condition that ultimately only sold for $400. My drums had the Big R style with re-enforcement rings. I recently purchased a four piece big R kit in the Koa wood wrap for $425. I started a thread about the lack of love for Rogers Big R kits and the basic responses were that the wraps were boring, the mounting hardware looks dated, the Big R stickers look tacky and there were some quality control issues during this time frame. Every Big R kit I have owned has been awesome. You could probably get $250-$350 for the snare though assuming it is in original condition. Good luck with the sale.

That serial number 25461 dates that Dynasonic to 1970-1971 (I own #25502), so it pre-dates those Big R bass and toms by a few years. That Dyna appears original, and with the proper snare frame included, $350 would be a fair price to walk away with it. I'm not a "Big R" guy, so I couldn't tell you what the bass and toms should sell for (Ploughman is the Big R expert here). As has been mentioned here many times, those Big R's are terribly underappreciated and undervalued. They are finely made and great sounding. They just don't get the following the Swivo period drums do, so they're not very collectable, but they do make for excellent players' drums.

The 2 larger toms and the bass are XP8 drums, made from 1979-on, 8 plies of maple, no rerings, no interior paint.

The small tom is from the prior generation, 5 plies, rerings, speckled paint inside.

A very common finish, it would be easy to replace that tom with an XP8 drum.

The Dynasonic snare is worth around $300 if complete with the snare frame etc.

I think $999 is a good starting point, especially if some hardware is included.
