Tinman, The pedal I scored last night on Ebay was a BIN for $55 which is a steal for a mint pedal. Yeah, first thing I will do when it gets here is check the grease.
MLayton-Thanks bro. It's a real beauty as far as hard to find mint Speed Kings go.

Great Deal!!!
Thanks Sandman and Tinman for the info. I kinda thought the new ones would be cast in China. Sad so much of our labor has gone overseas. Those DM pedals look pretty cool. Looks like he does a nice job on them too.
I can speak for the work drum mechanix does on his pedals as I play one I have played speed kings since 1964 and no other pedal his improved version is amazing i could care less about authentic i care about function and the improved version kicks butt..
I can only imagine how great a fully tweaked Speed King is. I have fallen in love all over again since I bought my first of many vintage Speed Kings off Ebay the last couple of months. So much so, I am selling off my 3 Tama Speed Cobra Pedals since I don't use them anymore.
I have used the Speed King a long time as well, their were two things I don`t like about it,..one was the way it grabbed the hoop,..I don`t recall the other but give me a minute !!
The solid linkage had minimal play on the way up but I don`t play soft and it didn`t matter. I tried so many others and didn`t like them so I stayed with the one I liked. The Phonic I had that got stolen had a double strap and had minimal play too.
I`m gonna retire it after I get done save`n for that Big Step I tried out not too long ago. I`ll always have a spot for my Speed King !!
Oh,...When I got my Speed king, I pulled off the pad and threw it away cuz I thought some idiot put it there to stop it from scratching !!
Are you going to get the Twin Beater Giant Step where you activate the second beater with your heel? I have tried so many pedals in my 37 years of drumming, some gimmicks, some solid performers but I have never tried the Sonor Giant Step. I know Steve Smith can flat out make his Giant Step do amazing things with his Constant Release Bass drum Technique. Sonor is what I consider the extreme eschalon of drums, well engineered, well executed, and all well made.
I`m one of those guys that take a long time to decide,..but I`m leanning twords a single beater. I have the original bass drum but put it aside and got a 79 transitional Phonic BD (early and latter parts) cuz the other one shakes too much from a smaller mount system. If I eva rev it up that high again, I`ll use both BD`s and prolly get one of each !!
