Putting modern skins on old drums-- help

Loading...

I've got a 1929 Ludwig bass drum. It measures 25 1/2 inches. I just bought a 26" fiberskyn powerstroke 3 remo head for it. It doesn't fit. It's too big. I wanted to put a modern head on it because real skin requires constant attention to tuning. Does anybody know of a drum head company that sells modern skins made to sound like real calf skin and will fit my Bdrum? Help!

Yea, I was told that Ludwig did the odd size thing on purpose so you had to buy their heads back in the 20's. I have the same dilemma.

Remo makes the Ambassador Classic Fit heads, but they are not real calf skin, I heard they sound pretty descent.

You can also try Matt Alling at CT Pro Percussion. He makes custom heads and is a VTG member. His prices are very competitive.

DrumJunkie,

I have the same problem with an early 20th Century 13.5" snare. The original calfskin heads are shot, and there's no alternative (that I know of) to custom-ordering new calfskins in the odd size.

Mike's recommendation to contact Matt Alling is good advice. Matt has made custom heads (and rope-tensioned drums) for me in the past, and his work is excellent. He is an authority on 18th and 19th Century drums, and he has customers all over the world. I'll be contacting him for those 13.5" heads. I suggest you do the same. Let us know what you end up doing, and post some pics of that 25.5" bass.

Mike
