Project Leedy - finally complete

Loading...

As some of you may recall, I completed the repair and re-paint of my beloved 1938 15"X8" Duco Leedy Broadway Standard a little while ago. Part of the extremely rare 4-point Standard throw was absent and I have been fruitlessly scouring all the usual places for a replacement since then. I am pleased to say that Mark Cooper came to the rescue and my lovely old Leedy is now 100% completed. I believe that Leedy only made the Standard 4-point throw for a year or two - if that and Mark said he had never seen another of these being sold separately.

I played her for the first time over the weekend and the sound is frankly, phenomenal. I tend to use a higher tuning and the crispness of the of the tone also has a wonderful rich depth, giving the drum an incredible fullness which I've not heard before.

I believe that the shell is single ply maple but I would be very interested to hear from the learned sections of this forum on whether 15" Broadways were common as I've not seen another.

It's all the more gratifying when you see how the drum arrived in the mail. It looked like it had been smoke-damaged in a house fire and then left in a cellar for 80 years!

Top drawer rescue, Gerard. And kudos again, Mr. Cooper, for the monumental assist. We all know how a single missing part can stall a vintage resto in its tracks for months - and stories like this keep the desperate of us looking and hoping. Truly inspirational. I wish I could hear her sing.
