Priming maple BD hoops

Loading...

Getting set to paint some Ludwig hoops that I've stripped down bare. I have oil based Krylon satin black.

Directions suggest priming, which seems to me just another step along with more sanding. Has anyone had success without priming?

I did 2 sets of hoops and didn't prime either one. Both are holding up fine. I forget the brand paint I used but just a black lacquer rattle can from Home Depot. Has a nice semi-gloss/satin finish.

Use a sanding sealer and give them a quick sand or steel wool rub before painting.

I don't bother with primer unless it is to hide major repairs.

Also remember the thicker the paint system, the less chip resistant it will end up being.

Great suggestions. Thanks.

How many coats should I aim to finish with? I'm thinking 3 light coats?

Best,

Aaron

I think I did 3-4 light coats before there was nice coverage.

Yes exactly, no primer 3 coats, that works nicely, a light rub over with steel wool between the coats and a good dusting.

Here's my "un patented" hoop spinner..

Thank's, just yesterday my wife spotted it in "her" cleanout of "my" garage..

Cruxifix screwed to a scrap of timber through the center so it spins.. allows you to coat both sides at the same time.. and to catch the lighting.

(I still have it)

Cheers
