All,

I need some help setting the right price for my Gretsch Roundbadge drum set. Here are the details and you can find pictures here: http://denver.craigslist.org/msg/3184861769.html Can you offer some advice on if $1,900 seems low or high? It's tough to price such an unusual kit. Thanks!

Ad:

GRETSCH roundbadge 4-piece drum kit in champagne sparkle. All original hardware and no extra holes in the shells. She is BEAUTIFUL and still sounds fantastic! The silver sealer is in excellent condition in all drums and bearing edges are perfect. This is a true American classic made in Brooklyn, NY in the early 1960s. This is a real vintage jazz drum kit. If you see this ad, this drum set is still available.

DETAILS:

*Drums: 14x20 bass drum, 8x12 tom, 5x14 snare drum, 14x14 floor tom.

*Shells: 6 ply Jasper shells throughout.

*Hardware: all original. Chrome is near perfect. some slight pitting in a couple of the rims but it has been cleaned and polished. Original snares.

*Stickers: There is one Gretsch serial number sticker in the bass drum. The other drums don't show any signs of ever having had serial number stickers.

*Wrap: Wrap is in good condition with tight seams. It was originally silver but has aged into a nice and even champagne sparkle throughout. The bass

drum hoops are original and have been given new inlay (original inlay wrap was in poor condition, but I have saved it if you want it).

Depends on where you are. There are a few Gretsch round badge kits on Portland's craigslist right now, and they're NOT selling for less than that. Heck, there's a natural maple 12/14/20 for $1200 that has been tempting me for a few weeks now.

...so, yeah, check your local market for pricing.

I'd say you're low at $1900. I'm not sure if shooting the photos in natural light made the color look a bit faded, but in that condition, in those sizes, I'd start them at $2400./$2500. And bottom out at, $2200. My prices might be low! Wait until you've heard from several other people.

That 14"x14" is rare and valuable all by itself. The market is good for Gretsch these days. Patience, your buyer will come.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I'm pertty sure early 60's are 6ply. The switch from 3ply to 6ply at Gretsch started in the late 50's and mixed ply (3ply and 6ply) kits went out the door into the early 60's. Paper tags showed up in 62....there may be some earlier I hear.

Nice drums - I think $1500 - $2000 is not over priced for them.

My 3ply late 50's kit in excellent condition is appraised at $2200. Three ply my not be any better of a shell compared to 6ply in the view of lots of folks but they tend to fetch more money.

That's a nice set.As far as your asking price and in todays market the set being listed on C/L its a fair price..I would think if you listed it on Ebay you would get a higher price for the set.Because of the condition of the set with no mod's.Oh i would change the size of the bass drum in your listing it should be a 14x20 .....Mikey

Mikey I was going to say that about the bd - mine is 1420 - but I thought, with all the exceptions I've run into with Gretsch, maybe this is a 1620. But probably not hu.

Rewrap or original finish. If original, it's a no brainer....even if it isn't and no mods...well...

Thanks for catching that BD measurement issue. Yes, it's 14 in deep... my mistake on that. I've corrected it. Thanks.

And yes this is all original wrap. Very nice condition... but it has mellowed a bit from silver into champagne (which is gorgeous). There is some spider cracking on the bass drum wrap but it isn't even visible from 3 feet away. Quite normal from what I've read.
