Premier 14"x10" Snare

Hi. I want to share with you my recent acquisition.

It's a white 14" Premier (I think it's 10" deep) with clear wood interior and reinforcement rings. It has 8 long double sided lugs.

The snare wires system is very simple and I'm not sure if it is original, the green cords aren't.

It has a metal part attached to a tension rod, maybe for marching purposes.

Please share your knowledge and opinions about it.

Nice drum! Did Premier use date stamps like some of the other makers?

Birch shell, steam bent beech re-rings. High quality shells. The strainer/butt end are original. If you lube it up, you'll see that it's a nicely working strainer. The claw on the rim can be removed. It's there because it's a marching snare.

I have had one like that. I used it as main snare in my band. With an emperor on top in a medium/low tuning it made for an incredibly deep and fat sounding rock-beast.

I have had an other one too, I cut it down to 6 inches and re-assembled the re-ring. Great sounding snare too.

If you may get the idea of re-moving the wrap and staining and oiling the wood, don't. There's something about the outer ply (fine horizontal lines) that will make the wood take the stain irregularly and look bad. If you choose not to stain and only oil/laquer, the lines will allso stay visible. This problem occurs with all Premier-made vintage birch shells I've seen (also tom and bass shells).

In the Netherlands, these drum abound and show up regularly on secondhand internet-market, for pretty cheap. It used to be a very much used marching drum for beginners/students etc. One day I was offered 12 of them for 120 Euro's! Of course I did not buy them.
