Polishing Vintage Cymbals

Loading...

I have some 60's era Zildjians, 14" New Beat hats, 20" medium (I would guess) ride and a 17" thin crash with 6 existing rivet holes.

I'm not a great fan of cymbal patina and prefer a highly polished look.

Doing the polishing by hand well...no.

Can a drill with buffer pad attachment work? What is the best cymbal polish?

Cheers and Thanks! Hurting

Kelly

Here is my set of what I believe to be new beats. I have a newer (90's) set and these are a lot lighter. Anyway, I sprayed these with groove juice and here are the results. The top cymbal was pretty tarnished, so I'm happy with the results. Can anyone date them by that stamp?

Absolutely NO to a drill-mounted buffer !

Man, all the experts will tell you DO NOT buff your cymbals.

That kind of buffing will create enough heat to damage a cymbal.

Elbow grease, effort, and care, brothers.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Yes...people don't realize that buffers actually alter the metal. That is how brilliant cymbals are created..they AREN'T just very shiny regular cymbals.

GrooveJuice is good on B20's, NOT on B8's...and they do a complete "strip job". Also Sabian Performers Cymbal Spray does that. they are both acid-wash cleaners, so they strip it ALL off.

I like Wright's Copper Cream. It takes patina off in phases. On a heavily patina'd cymbal, you would need to run it thru 3 or 4 applications to get it back down to original-new surface. But I usually stop before then, leaving some patina on it. Looks better than before and still has the aged sound to it, too.

Then wash with mild dish soap and warm water afterwards.
