Picked up a 60's Downbeat with Jazz Festival but...

Picked up a '62 Downbeat in my favorite wrap from that era, SBP.

But the 12'' tom has a dented in lug :(

Before I do something stupid - is this fixable and if so, how?

Luckily the 14x14 seems unscathed and the kick has a few tiny holes for lord knows what reason and missing it's original T-rods.

The Jazz Fest is on the bench now.

Much appreciated for any and all responses.

Clean it up, tune it up, and play it. Nice find, enjoy!

Check for movement perpendicular to the shell on the sunk lug. If it's at all mushy you've got the casing mounting hole to put a threaded rod through and squeeze/reform the shell. Plus glue of course. If it's rigid as is I guess I'd leave it...

Cool drums!

There are some guys on the forum and out in the general vintage market who can repair that type of damage. It does look like it needs repair. The tricky part is to deal with the wrap. The wooden portion is probably less difficult to deal with. Probably needs to be infused with glue and clamped using some wood that can conform to the general shape of the adjacent undamaged portion of the shell and thereby put the damaged area back to its original shape.

As noted above, nice find all together and with a Jazz Festival snare makes it very nice and well worth the investment of a proper repair. You may also be able to find an undamaged tom that matches because quite a few 12" toms were made in that color, many of which have become singles over the years.

Good luck on repairs and general restoration and cleanup.

The repair on the 12" tom will be very easy. The wood portion as mentioned above just needs some glue and clamps. The wrap you can use Seamfil:

Or you can use the same type of repair you would on a chipped windshield. They sell the kits at auto parts stores. Try to get the wrap as flush and level with the rest of the wrap.

Then use some compound (like you would on a newly painted car) followed by some waxes until it comes out nicely. I would think this repair would come out very nicely and be very hard to spot. The cost will be mainly in time.

Forget to mention; don't be afraid to sand inside or do what it takes with the glue (I would use a syringe to squirt glue in where possible) really into that affected area. You can easily re touch op that white paint without ever being able to tell the difference.

It might take a few sessions of glue and clamping to get it into place. I would support the inside and outside of the shell with some type of wood or other objects to help the drum in that portion take a rounded shape similar to the shell.

Some scrap wood from the lumber yard or big box store cut and sanded to match the curves should do the trick. Very nice project and with that matching snare money in the bank.

Great replies guys, thanks!

I'm going to clamp and re-glue, looks like someone already tried getting glue in there from the inside but didn't clamp. It's mushy but not terribly so. I'll re assess the wrap side after gluing/clamping and report back. :)

Unclamped, chrome all cleaned up and re-assembled. Close enough for government work but I might out source getting the final bit of laminate wrap fixed using a local laminate counter top patching company I use, they do a nice job of matching almost anything...
