Patina Removal in grooves - best way

Loading...

Well - what I perceive could be attributed to psychology - but if I had to guess, I would say it is brighter and a bit more sustain than before, but not a whole lot more sustain. It is limited by the metal composition that it is. It surely sounds better, but it IS an old MIJ cymbal - not their strength.

I have not played it in context though. I am going to jam with it tomorrow with my '68 Slingerland, but then again, I have NEVER played this cymbal on any kit. I just acquired it this past spring.

Like I said, I will be shooting a video with the exact same camera as the MIJ Cymbals video and then I will be able to tell - or shall I say WE will be able to tell - I hope.

John

Nice job on the cleanup! I'm sorry I was so late seeing this thread, I probably could have saved you some time and elbow grease. I generally don't clean cymbals, but I have cleaned up some low priced trashy cymbals before. The Barkeeper's Friend is the way to go, but what I do is make *** into a paste with water, smear it on with a sponge and walk away for about half an hour... then I wet it back down and give it a light scrub. The dirt just melts away with minimal effort. I use it for all sorts of stuff... wet it, walk away, wet it and wipe.... amazing stuff!

Really nice job. Patina is one thing, but that cymbal was nasty.

Another small tidbit on Barkeeper's Friend - it also comes in a liquid cream format. It's not as easy to find and costs a bit more, but it works really great on lugs and chrome hoops... just saying flower

Does Bar Keeper's Friend work well (if applied lightly) on clear coat finishes?

Great job there, drummerjohn. I can't take all the credit for the Bar Keeper's Friend info. Learned about it here on the VDF too at short while back!

My sore, dried out hands and arms thank you for your compliments! Add a win for the BKF column. BTW - I have noticed that there are several types of that product. I used the cleaner/polisher product.

.....but next time I will wear some gloves!

Yeah, they earned the pleasure of playing that cymbal tonight. It definitely brightened up that cymbal and gave it more sustain. It really is a nice big 22 ride now, best used for jazz. After I polish it up some more and wax it, I will add some pics to this post.

If you want to get the "gunk" out of the grooves without wrecking the cymbal.Get a small stainless steel wire brush-NOT THE BRASS ONEs.and brush lightly with the grooves. It takes awhile and the best part no chemicals are used You save to color of the cymbal. I have done this on many cymbals and it works great.OR take it to your local radiator shop and have them dip it then sandblast it. This works great as well.

John I only have one XTC cd converted out of all of that you gave me.My producer works slow, real slow. So far what I have sounds preety good. He re-mastered it as well ,but increased the guitar and bass volume.......Danke
