Painting shells--nitty-gritty detail type question

I plan to have some Pearl Tempro shells painted. The original wraps were badly cracked and yellowed, stripped and tossed. Literally fell off the drums...

I have a friend who is a professional cabinet maker who has a paint booth and tools.

How close to the bearing edges should the paint come? And, doing this for the first time, why?

As always, TOO much info welcomed. D.

BTW, still looking for the mij VERTICAL butt plate and strainer for the COS snare....[Attachment: 132199]

If its paint then I would mask off the edge about 1/16 of where the profile of the edge starts to flatten out.

Is that where you masked yours ? Because your paint jobs are incredible.

I noticed factory stain goes all the way and paint is held short. prolly to allow for head clearance.
