Painting Bass Drum Hoops - Spray Can Or Brush On?

James, depending on what's there now and what you're going to use will make the difference too. On the Ludwig's, I use lacquer, since that is what was used originally. I got much better results when I stripped all the old paint/lacquer off, and needed to use a lot less lacquer. The Ace Hardware black lacquer works great.

Here are the refinished hoops I'm referencing:

I am new to restoration and am about to start work on my first real project. Regarding the hoops: Is it necessary to strip ALL of the old paint off the entire hoop before repainting or do I just sand down areas that need to be touched up and repaint those (and hope that my new black paint is a close match to the old paint remaining on the hoop)? Thanks for any help!James

I went to Industrial Plastics and they ordered me a few rattle cans of Black Gloss Nitro Cellulose lacquer and it was pretty cheap - under $20 for two cans.

I used furniture stripper to take the lacquer off and boy did it work well - the lacquer just wiped off!

You probably already have done the job by now - I've been to this thread in a while -sorry. But it looks like you 've gotten all kinds of good advise.

Intresting thread here, i am about to restore a couple of wood hoops on my black panthers, but I'll probably just get some rustoleum satin black. sand the whoops, and replace the inlays. One of mine has a sky blue pearl inlay and the other has the original silver sparkle inlay. I like jayes idea of the black stain though, If i had new ones
