Painting a Batter Head

Loading...

I was thinking of painting the batter head of an old popcorn drum with black Krylon Fusion spray paint meant for plastics. The drum and rims are black and so I thought.....This would basically be for a visual effect although I can't see why the drum can't be used as an accent drum at times. I always seem to need some kind of a project with drums ahead of me! I am addicted (like the rest of you)! Have any of you guys tried this? If the Krylon were applied in VERY light coats, and left plenty of time to dry, would it work? Thanks everyone.

I've actually painted a lot of bass drum heads. Both with Krylon spray and whatever paint I had around. Never had any issues. I'll have to take a photo but years ago I made one of the coolest front heads ever, and by pure accident. I used the " Frosted Glass " spray ( forget who makes it ) and did it over a black head. Gave it 2-3 coats over. Then I took some fake blood and dripped it on, it did something odd and formed little puddles. So I took a finger and spread it out. The final result looks like three distorted wolf heads, totally perfect for when I'm playing with a metal band. Had I actually tried to do that I would have failed. But by pure accident I made one of the coolest front heads I've ever seen. People always comment on it.

I used latex wall paint on a floor Tom Batter one time. It really dropped the pitch, sort of like an Evans hydraulic. I placed the quart can in the center and didn't paint the center- I colored it in with pencil! This was my (patent pending) graphite head.

Needless to say, all my heads were soon covered with graphite...

But the paint stayed on. It was a coated ambassador in the beginning.

Both can be made to work. Flexible connectors may not be feasible yet, admittedly (The delay would probably be too much) but, soon someone will design one. Painting an old head which is grimy beyond clean-up is an option now. All it takes is a little thinking beyond the box! Oh yeah, don't forget my recent interest in Mr. Ivor Arbiter's drums. That's creativity although some would say a waste of time. Thanks for the clip on Leonard Cohen though. VERY cool!
