Painted B/O Badge

Loading...

I was gifted a 3 ply Ludwig kit that was painted (shells and hardware). I'm about finished cleaning the paint off the hardware (good shape)and I've removed most of the wrap except for a couple tough sections. I was thinking about rewrapping or sanding and staining. While looking at wrap companies, bum wraps looks cool and inexpensive, any feedback?? I'm leaning toward staining but was wondering about how the raised ply/seam on the shells will look....thanks in advance. I'll also need a couple Ludwig 20" BD hoops if anyone has a pair for sale.

I would have removed the paint first before removing the wrap.. The paint probably preserved the original finish and you could have found a really nice finish wrap underneath the paint, that is, if the wrap didn't have any cracks. Since you removed the old wrap, i would have gone the way you're thinking, which is refinishing instead of rewrapping.. Those new Keystone X wood finishes are a really cool and nice alternative to the traditional staining, as well as the new Club Date Duco finishes.

Thanks for the reply human71. I was able to find a 20" hoop...the wrap had some cracks, etc. The wrap was not in good shape. I'm leaning toward Precision Drum Wrap, but may spend the time sanding and staining one drum to see how it comes out. The seems in the exterior of the shells are quite pronounced.

A couple things I'm in need of for this project:

4 straight Spurs. I've included a picture of the hardware. Looks like Kate '60's Ludwig straight Spurs??

A 13" rim.

I completely removed the wrap, sand and refinishing using shellac via French Polish ( see you tube)

One more pc to go ( 13x19) and I'm done

12" tom exterior was mahogany ( not too good shape)

I applied Maple veneer to match rest of kit.

Surely not a Collector item but definitely a Player kit
