Paint curing ...

So i've finally finished the coats of paint on my vintage Stewart bass drum shell, and it looks really good. It has been drying in my laundry room for a little over a week now, (9 days approx.) and it is dry to the touch. The room is always kept at nice 20 degrees Celsius (about 68 fahrenheit).. However, there is still a slight bit of "tackiness" to the paint, which i'm assuming means the paint hasn't cured yet ? I used a semi-gloss latex paint and will be finishing with a satin lacquer. My question is, should i wait for the paint to fully cure before applying lacquer, or is it safe to just go ahead and apply lacquer right away ? I'm thinking i should wait another few weeks ??

When I paint drums or really anything else that I want a nice durable finish to, I use a handheld blow dryer to bake the paint in. That seems like a long time for that paint to dry.

Laundry room may be humid. Perhaps check how humid with a hygrometer.

Thanks for your response ! My laundry room is actually pretty dry. We're currently experiencing very cold and dry weather for the past week , so i've got my baseboard heater at about 20-22 (68-70*F), so it's nice and dry in there. So much so that it feels like late June weather , since the room is quite small. There may be some humidity in the walls because my hydro meter box is there, and behind that is a brick wall, which is insulated with pink fiberglass. This may be the reason why it's seemingly dry, but still a slight bit tacky to the touch.

I'm going to put the shell in my gear room, which is at about 73*F, and leave it in there for a few days and see how it dries.

Thanks for your response..

Yeah, it does seem like a long time, but i've researched paint curing on the internet, and with latex paint, it says to wait up to 30 days for it fully cure ! All i want to know is, that if the paint is dry to the touch but may not be fully cured,

can i still go ahead and lacquer ?

You should use a water based polyurethane over a latex based paint.

Well I always recommend purchasing these products at a regular paint store( not a big box store) so the people at the store can help you, they know what you are using so they can answer your questions better than we can.

But, basically if it is tacky like you say then it wont sand worth a crap

( remember to sand between coats) so with that said, no, do not clear coat until it is not tacky anymore. But I dont understand why you are clear coating over paint, the paint has no shine?

After 9 days Jeff. Sum Ting Wong. 9 Hours is too long for latex to be tacky.

The flattening agents will dissolve after two days and then you need tools to remove latex.
