Opinion needed please

I am working on an 18" floor tom that a very nice person sent me out of the blue. Thanks to a deal with drumhack I have all the hardware, except one leg and mount because the floor tom I got from him was a 16" and had three legs. The 18" requires four legs, so I need to find one more somewhere. Looking at ebay I see the mount only for 40.00 which is ridiculous, and you never see one leg for sale.

It is tempting to to re drill the shell for three legs, since I am wrapping it anyway. I would like your opinion on this please. I know it is bad to put extra holes in a drum but I cant see paying that kind of money for one little part. And besides, its a players kit that has been wrapped anyway. So what do you think, go ahead and do it?

PS, I did place an add in the wanted to buy section but I don't have much hope for that.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Three legs will be more stable on uneven surfaces. I once had an 18" ft, it worked perfectly with three legs.

I like the sound of that. I do have other 18" ft's and they only have three legs so I knew it would be stable enough, I just really hate to drill the shell. Thanks for your reply!

Jeff,

Re-drill for three legs. It will be fine. Is that a Slingerland tom? What other companies used four legs on an 18"?

Rogers up to some time in the mid 9/72 era had 4 on the floor for the 18 FT.

Jeff,

For what it's worth, my 18" Pearl FT (late 70s) only has 3 legs.

And, I sold a Ludwig 18" FT about a year ago... it only had 3 legs.

Since this is going to be a rewrap and player's kit anyway, I'd think 3 legs would be OK...

I'd definitely go for three legs if you have the opportunity.. I have pondered why they used 4 legs since 1977.. any angle adjustment with 4 is a Pain ITA.

Cheers
