old tape residue removal

My 24" Zildjian came with some nasty tape residue .It is hard as a rock. What is a good way to remove it without using hammer and chisel. There is about 40 years of dirt on the cymbal, but I have learnt my lesson about cleaning cymbals. It sounds pretty good now,I am hoping there is a non abrasive way to get that tape glue off . Thanks in advance,V

PS at one time somebody drilled 3 rivet holes, and installed rivets. SOMEBODY pulled the rivets out and knarwled the holes up to were they are now,all jagged-like the pill......WHY would somebody do that????

Lighter fluid (naptha) might work for you. I've used it to remove tape residue from heads and from cymbals before. Just don't use it on laquered or finished surfaces.

I just cleaned a cymbal that had tons of this thick rock hard duct tape residue. I used Jasco premium paint & epoxy remover,.. it worked in seconds & washed off quickly , cleanly w/ water. (This was an old can, & this product is no longer available in Calif. The glue would not budge for any other product). Also be careful of products that turn the residue into a thick paste, which will only spread & work it's way deeper into your cymbal. Jasco is very nasty to work with, & you'll want to avoid all logos & markings on your instrument.

I always use pure acetone (also found in nail polish remover).

Goof off, and WD40 might work as well. I like a nail polishment with acetone. About $4 at DUANEreed or another.

GOO GONE, Works pretty well. Rub on a thick coating & let sit. Scrub with stiff plastic brush. Repeat as needed.... It's cheap & works well on most things.

Naptha is great for this. Also it will NOT harm lacquered or most all finishes. I've used it on varnished/french polished instruments with no trace left behind. Of course it's wise to dab a treated Q tip in a small spot to be sure. Acetone while safe on raw metal will eat most finished surfaces.

Believe it or else!
