Old K = quiet cymbals?

Loading...

I have a pair of Wuhan 14" hihats that I bought pretty much to see how horrible they would be off of eBay for something like $40. The metal they used has some (I said "some") of the soft and buttery characteristics of my old K's. They aren't beautiful like the K's but trashy in a musical way. The cream of the crop junk cymbals. I almost feel ashamed admitting I like them.

I could play them at a gig but most "normal" cymbals I try at music stores would drive me nuts. They're all that brittle metal with treble spikes.

Actually, my now defunct dealer carried Wuhans for a while. IMHO they were definitely better than the B8 sheet bronze products from Sabian and Zildjian and didn't cost a whole lot more. I think Wuhans used something similar to B20 bronze. I heard a couple of them geared more to a jazz sound and they weren't bad at all. In fact, at the then ridiculously inexpensive price point they were a pretty good value. I think the jazzy sounding rides I heard were around $120 or so six or seven years ago. While way too trashy for my tastes, I could see a lot of drummers getting into them. A lot of folks prefer the Wuhan chinas (no pun intended) more than the offerings from Sabian, Z and the like, and at half the cost.
