Old Gretsch in weathered shape

Loading...

Picked this one up from Ebay. Drums hardware seemed in rough shape but I didn't realize how bad it was until I got it. The drum itself was in quite nice shape, round, good bearing edges, nice wide and deep snare beds. Bit of factory silver overspray on some of the edges. A good sign it hadn't been messed with ever. The plating on the rims and Lightning I strainer was badly pitted as were most of the lugs.

As per advice found on this site and others I used scrubbing bubbles to clean the satin finish, and for the rims and strainer I used aluminum foil and Mothers aluminum wheel polish as well as their chrome cleaner. The aluminum foil trick actually removed pitting and burnished the rims smooth. I spent about 3hrs on the rims alone! I tried the aluminum plus polish on the lugs but quickly went to just chrome cleaner since the plating was thinner on the lugs than on the rims. And the pitting wasn't that bad on the lugs. Not horrible anyhow. Fresh heads and a fresh set of new Gretsch 42 strand snares to replace the old and worn Gretsch Power Snares and a quick tuneup and my goodness, what an amazing sounding drum!

BTW, is it possible this drums plating is nickle? It doesn't look at all like chrome when next to drums with known chrome.
