Now THIS guy has some gorgeous K's!

I suspect Mr. Dal Monego is playing these in a pretty dead room. Overhead mike or not. His drumming is simply stellar and the cymbals sound really uniformly good. My guess would be a dead room to reduce the wash, ring and bring out the stick. YMMV.

I actually didn't even pay the recording environment much attention. Good recordings like Franco's just....sound good. I agree his playing is exceptionally good and the sound (however he gets it) is a pleasure to hear. Most of the cymbal demonstration videos on YouTube are recorded poorly, in my opinion. I'm glad some of that is changing and people are actually using the available technology to get a good, clearly-defined sound. I wish I knew exactly how he was getting that sound, to be honest! I'd do the same thing! Then again, he's playing old K's and I'm not! :(

He records with two AKG C451B overhead and a Zoom H6N. Excellent player and gets a great recording sound which is all relative. Put a crappy Sabian B8 ride on there and then tell me what you are hearing. I do agree you have to test any old K in person, feel is just important to me as sound.

To me, that 22 sounds good in this context, period. Anyone who is recording with good mics positioned well in a good room is getting an enhanced sound. If the cymbal feels good to him, does what he likes, and he gets this recording, then good on him.

Great. And because it felt so good to him and it did what he liked so well, he sold it.

Good on him.

LOL! I think part of his gig is that he buys and sells used old Ks and nice old Gretsch bop kits....probably keeps the ones he likes the best. I'll bet he doesn't sell his favorites.

It's one thing to have a bunch of nice old cymbals to study and tap on and look at for historical purposes, but Franco actually plays the cymbals he has and records with them...and his playing and recording technique, makes whatever cymbal sound great -at least as far as I've heard.

This happens a lot....One guy gets an instrument and can't get a good sound from it, so he blames the instrument. Along comes someone else who takes the very same instrument and makes it sound great. Good on them!

Cymbals are SO personal to each player at the end of the day, anyway. I think that there are very few instances where two drummers will get the same sound from the same cymbal. Everything makes a difference...the sticks, the player's grip, the volume at which they are played...and the context of the playing....AND even the other musicians and how they respond to a given sound makes a difference in how a listener will perceive, overall, how great a specific "thing" is.

Take Jimmy Cobb and his playing on "So What" with Miles Davis... In an interview, he said that he thought he ruined the take because he hit the cymbal too hard at one point...But keep in mind, this was Miles Davis and company...so what might have been perceived as "wrong" turned into an iconic moment because of the greatness of the band.
