A local sale is always easier in my mind as the buyer can actually look the item over and ask direct questions, settle on the product/price and move on.

In a distance sale the buyer may have unrealistically built the item up in their mind's eye and what can ensue is likely to be disappointment. There is great difficulty in trying to describe the item condition while conversing in a linear fashion online/email is difficult at best (FtoF conversations are never that one-dimensional). Even supplementing the description photographically can be a problem as the images can be extremely misleading (the photographer picks what they want the viewer to see, image equipment usually is poor, image resolution limitations on servers, etc...).

I think a big element in the sale is to carefully manage expectations - both seller/buyer. Of course this is easier said than done!

As far as the vintage guys being nuts statement, well, I'd have to totally agree with that. I sold a very nice blue oyster pearl tom on ebay, only to have the buyer claim it was not described correctly because a tension rod was not original. After that didn't work with ebay he started claiming it had cosmetic issues. After a hefty battle he wound up getting a refund, because of this and the insane fees ebay charges, they have lost my business forever.

I would have to concur that some of you vintage guys out there are a bit nutz! I mean, a non-original tension rod?? COME ON! Call it what you want....old, classic, or vintage.....all these terms are just nice ways of saying IT'S USED! If you're gonna nit-pick about ONE "non-original" tension rod on a drum that is say 25+ years old that was gigged with on a regular basis......YOU NEED TO GET A CLUE AND A LIFE! HELLO PEOPLE.....IT'S USED....YOU WANT SOMETHING NEW, GO BUY SOMETHING NEW! DOH

Not a collector by any means and also not a "psycho" when it comes to receiving items that have been less than accurately described on ebay. I once bought a Slingerland floor tom and when I received it, it was missing some tension rods. They were there in the pic of the "mint" drum, but no big deal, just went to the local shop and picked up some.

Going back to some of the earlier comments, I am not sure the "psycho" collector guys want something new, they just want something stock. They attach significance and value to the item in its ORIGINAL, or nearly original state. We all nitpick about something...for these guys its drums. I dont think that is all that evil. I do, however, think that there are some less than honest people who buy on ebay and take advantage of sellers, as is the case in the original post on this thread. Rather than putting the "psycho" stamps on the collectors, perhaps we should put them on those dishonest/greedy people looking to take advantage of others in the drum community in places like ebay. Just my :2Cents:

I look at it this way,......If I were to buy a car from the 40`s,..I wouldn`t want the factory tires, oil, coolant or break shoes ect.....I look at drums the same way,..if parts are standard, one goes bad,..that`s why they`re standard,...you can get and change them. If they are custom or designer tention rods for instance, change`n them out for standard is a no no.

There are parts and there are pieces with drums,...If you`re gonna wack something with a stick year after year,....expect some wear and tear !!

I would always sell "as is" like another poster pointed out !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I don't understand how you can tell one tension rod from another. I mean, if I put a standard tension rod from a Slingerland 12" tom on to a Ludwig 12" tom, you can tell the difference ? Or even a newer tension rod, I mean, really:confused:

so i'm beginning to learn a very valuable lesson in the vintage drum community..you people are nuts!i've never seen someone get so bent out of shape over the littlest things.example: man i would love to buy that snare drum..but one of the tensioning rods is not original..are you kidding me?don't get me wrong..i pretty much only buy things that are original (my definition=not altered/customized from the factory) but passing on a snare because it doesn't have the original snare wires? come on.i'm brining this up because i recently had an Ebay sale turn into a nightmare.lets just say i sold someone a "drum" and that "drum" had a few minor issues that i never even knew about (because i don't take apart my drums lug for lug and go over their "authenticity") and now i owe that someone serious $$$ and cannot get x-mas gifts for my significant other/family.it just amazes me how bent out of shape these collectors/players can get.i understand extra holes/a re-wrap..but a small split in the re-enforcement hoop? no.these things i'm speaking of are just examples of course. i'm not gonna get into to the whole "reality" of my Ebay nightmare.but i've just really learned a valuable lesson(s) when it comes to vintage drums.DON'T TRUST ANYONE!you don't "know" people in the internet community (craigslist/ebay) you have to ask questions, get pictures, get serial numbers, etc. THE DRUMS NEVER LIE! take them apart! look at the interiors of the shells! a lot of people are good cover-up artists out there! be careful! i made the mistake of trusting the person i bought the "drum" from and now i'm paying for it.THIS IS THE VOICE OF REASON!i'm just trying to help you guys not fall into the same trap that i have. and if you know ebay members/shops/people who do this..TELL EVERYONE! why would you want someone to suffer the same tragedy you went through? we here on the forum must stick together for the greater good and help one-another! (hence my ranting)in closing..i wonder..how particular are you about vintage drums? are you one of the "psychos" (as i call them) and if so..why!? p.s.just speaking from a bad experience..never meaning to offend.-shaunSoap Box

Hi Shaun, I hope you are not referring to the 57 Ludwig Silver Sparkle Super classic that hasn't arrived yet. Did someone else buy this snare before me and then return it?

Slingalud.

it was not. at all.

it wasn't even a snare drum i am speaking of.

i just put "drum" there to keep it vague.

didn't want to get into the details.
