I realize it's taboo to remove the old skin off a vintage kit, but this skin was not only beyond seriously faded, but had holes and was coming up in several places. Yes, I could have easily repaired the pulls, but I did not like the fade nor did I like the extra holes. I pulled gently on the old wrap and it literally fell off. I figured it wanted a new skin. So, I obliged.
It looked like it wanted to be Gold Sparkle so that's what I wrapped it in. (actually, I had this wrap for another kit and this one begged for it)
I did some prep work on the shells and made sure the were smooth and filled. Boring talk and of no interest to me.
I also scrubbed and polished the snot out of the hardware. I believe that's the technical terms "polished the snot". Fun Fun Fun. This stuff is what separates us from the common garden spider. Well, that an the extra six legs. Oh yeah...and all those eyes. ... and the book lung, and the chelicerae fang, and ... well, you get the point.
It's turning out fairly nice. I did have the "Screw Incident", spoken about in another thread, so the hardware installation has to wait...and we shall never speak of that again.
I've got a set of nice Ludwig Maple hoops from a Maple Gloss kit I used to have. I worked the hoops with some sanding and some OSMO Hardwax Oil. They now have a nice old vintage look to them. They blend very well with this kit. Love that OSMO!
All in all, it's been a nice Spring Break. Looking forward to getting the correct washers so I can continue installing the hardware. Till next time, this is Armondo DelFucci reminding you, "Remember to always use a gentle up and down motion when you brush. Treat 'em nice and they'll be with you in your Autumn years."
