Newly restore Blaemire/Camco kit Last viewed: 6 seconds ago

So this is my most recent Blaemire restoration.

It is one I restored for my business partner David Martin. He does not know at the time of this posting that I have even done this for him. It is being delivered Friday... so shhhhh...don't let him know yet!

I felt I almost had to do this for him because he does not even own an original Blaemire kit! It is just wrong that he has been without an original Blaemire kit since that is what our J-M/Blaemire drums are based on.

David bought one of my Blaemire shells and built a snare before we were in business together and it may have even been the impetus for the beginnings of our company...but this is his first kit.

This kit is another example of an intact kit. It has all the original Camco lugs and hardware that it started with. We got this kit as a 13-14-16-22 along with the two concert toms I recently sold. Since I wanted to give Dave a complete restored kit, it really needed a snare. I decided to take the larger rack tom and cut it down for the 5.5X14 snare you see here. This makes it into a nice solid kit. I did have to buy a set of Camco snare lugs and as I could not find a throw off and butt plate to my liking, I used a set of the new George Way throw offs and butt plates. I think they look great on this snare and will allow for a set of vintage ones if they come along. This snare sounds particularly nice. These are first generation Blaemire shells and may well be the oldest examples I have ever seen or worked on. There is a lot of texture to these shells and a lot of air in the resin. Allen worked all this out in his later shells but I personally love the look of this raw and almost primitive example of Allen's wonderful shells.

It has taken me about a year to finish this kit for David as I have been busy building our J-M and Blaemire snares and kits. David is a great partner to me and I am glad to be able to restore this one for him.

BTW...I got a call from Rhys Clark as I was writing this up. You can see him playing Blaemire drums in the following link with Billy Joel. He still has this kit and wants to come over and see our stuff. So cool!

Jinx - What a truly wonderful and appropriate gift for your business partner! A year to complete? That's a labor of love and I'm sure Dave is going to be blown clean out of his socks when he sees it.

Man, when I wrote to you last year inquiring about shells drilled for Camco hardware you didn't mention this kit you were working on! I'm happier than a pig in sh*t with my 72 Blaemires, but I still want to buy a set of -your- shells and outfit them with all Camco hardware. That order will be coming soon, mark my words.

Loved hearing the Billy Joel tune with the Blaemires holding down the groove. The toms on these kits are something special. I hear it every time I sit down to play. They have a depth and clarity of tone matched by no other drums I've ever played. I usually rotate the kits I play every six months or so, just so I never get bored with the sound of the drums. But I can tell you right now, it'll be awhile until I swap out anything else for my Blaemires. Your snare was the perfect compliment to the kit. I only wish my kit was just the raw shells, but black wrap is cool and has tons of mojo, the drums are perfecta-mundo just the way they are.

Congrats Dave! Kudos to you, Jinx. A fine gesture and a classy, thoughtful one too!

Moo-yuk! Is -that- how they start out? Now I see why it's so labor intensive to get the shells to the stage you bring them to. How do you 'clear' the shells, Jerry? (If it's a secret no need to respond,) but I'm curious how you get the fiberglass so clear and bright green. It's the difference in color from 'before' to 'after' that I'm curious about.

Killer job on those shells bro. Now I can see what a mess they were when you got them. I'm impressed and now I can see how it could take a year of spare time to finish the entire kit.
