All my BD hoops are finished groove and all.
The last ones I did had the inlay in place and I just taped over it and painted, came out perfect.
Then yes, paint the whole hoop!
yep, brand new hoops, waiting for finish. I know my other drums are finished in the groove, but I wasn't sure if you guys had better luck/better reason NOT to do it that way...

I painted mine and then laid the inlay in with contact cement. Seems to be working.
The glue wiill actually absorb into the raw wood. If it is painted then i would sand the inlay area with med or course sandpaper before I applied the glue, This will give the glue something to absorb into. Conatact adhesive doesnt stick very well to slick surfaces.
What I mean is, sand the inlay area just enough to scratch it a little. That will make the adhesive stick to it better. Sorta like sanding a painted surface before you paint over it.
