Need advice/suggestions Last viewed: 2 days ago

Hey all.... I am now finished almost with my 1961 Ludwig BDP kit... In order to give me a little more sound versatility, I bought a 13 x 9 tom (a 67 Ludwig BDP) to go with the original 61 Ludwig BDP 12 x 8 which is rail consolette mounted. In order to have more stability and to preserve that consolette, I am looking at more alternatives for mounting/using both toms in a more stable way...double tom stand, snare stands????? Please, your help is much appreciated...

PS it now has a nice white ambassador head on the 12 x 8 tom

Ooooh, that's an easy one! x-mas3

You can get any number of "grabber" tom L-arms that fit onto an existing cymbal stand. You also have the option of buying a combination stand that has both a tom L-arm grabber and the cymbal stand all-in-one. Just be sure to get the smaller diameter L-arm for the vintage tom's bracket.

Thx! Let's say it is the 60's...What would've been the solution then? Any vintage hardware solutions for that time period?

Sometimes, people would put an extra arm onto the rail bar if the consolette was centered. But yours is off-center, so that would look weird.

The reality is that most vintage kit configurations in the 60's had only one mounted tom and the ride cymbal was pulled in tighter. Off the top of my head, I think the only dual-tom kits from that era were the Hollywood kit and the Blue Note *edit* kit.

Let me check....stand by....

Yeah...and the Standard line had a dual tom setup, too.

I suppose you could find a double tom stand a la a Blue Note kit and then set it off to your left a bit. It wouldn't allow you to have the two toms exactly centered, though.

Really, other than finding a kit from that era with an original double tom mount already installed...... I would NEVER advise anyone to drill a perfectly good shell to self-customize a vintage drum.

I think using a snare stand is a good idea and might be what we would have done "back then". You can put it close into the side of the bass and set the same tilt angle as the other tom. That's what I have done with a 10X14 tom (converted from a marching snare) that I added to my Hollywood kit...works great, all three toms have the same tilt and are equally spaced.

When I was 12 years old I got my first Ludwig kit, a Standard that had been recovered and the bass drum left virgin. The two rack toms were on a stand on the left side of the bass drum with my ride cymbal over the right side of the bass drum. I've been setting up like this ever since when playing with 2 rack toms. I've played kits that were "traditionally" set up with the toms over the bass drum, then the ride cymbal ends up high or way over to the right, and it just feels awkward to me. The other way is much more ergonomic.

Back then, they would have drilled it for a double tom mount or 2 rails or something just to make it playable the way they want! And today we would be *****in' about it because its vintage and who could have done something like this!!

LOL!!! But who knew then.....!!

Thx to all, do not worry, no drilling is gonna be done. I will just experiment with a couple of the suggestions and see what works best for me. You have given me some ideas to work with.

are you sure you can't slide the current tom all the way over and add another arm to the current rail mount.......it just might work......
