I pulled the trigger on these Tamas that were put up for sale last week by a guy I know here in NJ. $260. He cut down the rack toms to 8x12 and 9x13 and recovered the set in white satin flame. I tried them out today and they sound decent and look great. I'm picking them up Monday. The 8x12 is not pictured.
I know, they're not vintage, but for $260, I couldn't say no.

I do like that Gretsch, and the Slingerland as well, that he's selling, but I can't spare a day to get out there. My daughter is getting married next week. Bad timing! Surprised it isn't gone already!

Jim, that Slingerland set is awesome. I played it. The drums sound incredible. The 12x15 floor tom is a cannon and the bass drum is killer.

DrumBob! Great looking kit! And a good price, too! I've got a Superstar snare drum wrapped in original White Satin Haze. Purchased as a shell only and I added tube lugs strainer, butt, etc. No pictures currently, but if you're interested, I can get some pictures soon!

My favourite Swingstars from around '84, with the "box lugs". I had a set, also cut down to "trad" sizes & remember them sounding very good, kinda Fullerton Rogers-ish. Somebody did a good job with yours. Congrats!

Thanks. The seller does all his own work, and he's a very meticulous guy and very soft spoken and perhaps shy. I could tell yesterday when I went to his house. I asked him if he wanted to recover and work on one of my snare drums, and he wasn't willing to do work for anyone else at this point. It's strictly a hobby he enjoys. I tried giving him a down payment on the Tama set, but he wouldn't take it. He wanted the $260 in a lump sum on Monday.
He likes rehabbing drums. All four sets he has for sale have been completely disassembled and cleaned with Novus and everything has been lubricated. The sets were all player's grade, but excellent player's grade. Immaculate, really. He's actually a piano and guitar guy and plays drums for kicks. He's not out to make a killing financially, just break even. We need more sellers like him.

It is a beautiful set, but the tom shells are just a fraction too big and fitting heads is difficult, according to the seller. The bass drum shell is in turn, a bit too small, so heads swim on it. Just goes to show you that accurate tolerances are much better today on new drums than they were years ago.

I find it hard to believe that a company with such a fine reputation as Gretsch could have had that sort of a problem, and it apparently went on like that for years! Heck, even cheapo MIJs didn't suffer from problems as basic as getting the shell sizes accurate.
