Mystery snare drum Last viewed: 1 day ago

I know nothing about drums. I’ve search the web trying to identify this old snare drum I got from my grandfather. The story goes that some guy gave it to him when he was a kid, so it has to be 1930s or earlier. No other identifying marks other than what is in the pictures. Appears to be brass and wood. Any leads appreciated!

Based on the Initials on the fine tuning knob, I think its a G.C Conn drum.

Very interesting and rare example.

1974-75 Rogers Starlighter IV New England White 13/16/22 (w/Dyna)
1964-67 Rogers Blue Glass Glitter 12/14/16/20
early Oaklawn Camco Blue Moire 12/14/20
1926 Super Ludwig 5x14
1960-ish Ludwig COB 5x14 Super Sensitive
1960-ish Ludwig COB 6.5x14 Super Sensitive
1970 Ludwig COB Cut-Badge 5x14 Supra Phonic

I would certainly say that "interesting" is an understatement! I've never seen one like this, so I will refer to kdg that this is a G.C. Conn.

Mark,

I really don't know much about early Conn drums, but I found those Initials and then just did some interweb sleuthing.

This Conn drum pic looks very similiar, in that the same basic tuning idea seems to be the same (or close)

VERY close. I can't quite make out the patent date on that one lug, but appears to be Aug 2, 89 (?) which would fall in line with Conn's enterprises.

I had no idea that Conn made such fancy drums, but just a preliminary search turned up some real beauties. The perforated shells are quite interesting! There are engraved shells, there are drums with unique rims....very innovative stuff for its day, I'm sure.

I very much appreciate all the replies. Thank you. Now I have to figure out what to do with it.

Might also be relevant that the lore of where this drum came from took place 30 miles from Elkhart, IN so see some more connections thanks to your comments.

Drew1975,

From the bottom of the catalog page you posted I believe it says the tuning system was patented on August ?(1)?, 1883?
