My Snare Drum

Loading...

This is my snare drum. I think it is a Premier Super Ace but im not certain. My dad bought the drum a couple of years ago for around 20 pounds. It had a gold sparkle wrap but it was pealing off and somebody had tried to paint over it. My dad vineered it in burr walnut. The mechanism works fine and it still has a very old everplay skin on it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much its worth. Cheers Mike

Hi Mike.

My general feeling is that whenever you change the drum in any way, you lose value. Look at vintage wrapped drums in general...the better the original wrap condition, the more valuable the drum as a rule. When someone spray painted the original wrap on your drum, you lost much of the ability for the drum to gain in value.

After removal of the wrap and addition of the veneer, you basically have a non original drum. At this point, it becomes hard to put a value on it. A number of other things affect value...does the drum have original hoops? What is the depth of the drum? What is the hardware condition?

Ok, all that said, if there is minimal pitting, original hoops and a standard depth (not piccolo). I would say $80 - $120 for a range. My opinion only. In an ebay auction, anything can happen on any given day...it all depends on the buyers out there. I have been surprised many times before.

That drum looks nice.. I would definitely pay you a hundred for it, probably, especially if I were a Premier collector.

I am new to this forum. I have hung out at the Drumforum and the cymbalholics and a bit on groovologist. This looks like my kind of forum! Hi!

Anyway, I have an old Premier snare drum that I found as well, only it was painted white on both inside and out. I can't tell right away if it is original but if it isn't the white paint is a glossy finish inside the drum. If I take some pics maybe I'll post them. The hardware looks original but may not be complete. It has an interesting parallel throwoff (formerly, anyway) that is missing some parts, and the hoops seem to be original--actually there is no badge. One Hoop says Premier engraved on it in block letters and the other hoop says DOMINION MINOR on it. The lugs are sort-of curved two-sided lugs and it is an 8 lug wood snare with re-rings in the shell--6.5x14. Does anyone have any examples of a Premier Dominion Minor snare drum that they would want to post pictures of that i could compare my drum with? I think some restoration work would be required to get it close to original, and it is painted inside--I'd like to know if that was a feature of them or if this was painted sometime later. The exterior white surface has some mild weather checking in the finish. I know this drum will sound great if I can figure a way to get the snare throwoff to work properly (possibly adding parts to bring it to original), as the central bar is missing along with some other parts.

With all due respect to the original poster of this topic--I hope you don't mind if I try to get more Premier snare drum info while we're at it here...
