my Gretsch RB Restoration project

Loading...

Well this is my first post on here. ive been looking through this forum for a while and enjoy reading everything and learning and im finally getting my first gretsch round badge kit tomorrow. I tour in a band full time so this will be a players kit, also considering the condition. It has added holes, and was already rewraped once. Currently i want to 1. patch the added holes 2. rewrap and redrill original holes 3. replace missing original hardware. I need some good help so any advice/pictures/anything you can give me is very much appreciated. here is what were working with

bass drum, 22x14. currently has a ludwig tom mount, cymbal arm holder was moved slightly, there is 2 sets of holes for the rail not sure which is original, and is missing one of the other cymbal arm mounts, not sure if the pratt muffler is original. ill have pictures below.

rack tom, 13x9. Has a ludwig tom mount added, missing the diamond mount, holes patched. ill patch the ludwig holes and put the old diamond plate back on. the badge is a bass drum badge? it was a large vent. This is odd, not sure if this is a common thing, but i want to patch the hole and put a tacked on badge, the floor tom is also like this

floor tom, 16x16, only thing that is missing is the bottom muffler, and the badge is also wrong like i said above.

i want to refinish this kit in WMP.

here is some pictures!

Welcome to the group. You've come to the right place for all things vintage drums.

Your kit doesn't look that bad. Aside from the Ludwig hardware, the drums look complete. Based on the cymbal arm mount, floor tom leg mounts and the silver paint on the inside of the shells your kit is probably early 1960's. Are there labels on the insides of the shells? Do all of the shells have original silver paint and the rounded lug bolts? You might also want to check to see if the shells are 3-ply or 6-ply.

Whoever installed the Ludwig tom mount on the bass drum did a very good job in drilling the holes. Patching the holes is not too difficult. You can get some dowel rod to plug the bolt holes, but you will need a piece of ply the same thickness as the shell to patch the larger hole. When you're ready to tackle this piece, just search the forums and ask any additional questions.

The Ludwig mount on the 9x13 tom might be using two of the diamond mount holes. You can get an original diamond mount or order one of these from Steve Maxwell: http://www.maxwelldrums.com/hardware-parts-maxwell-rail-consolette-holder-c-347_233.html

I installed one on my son's Gretsch kit and it's a lot better than a worn out original rail consolette.

Based on the changes to this kit, you are lucky to still have the original floor tom legs. These can range in price from $75 to $100 for the set of three. It is interesting that the mounted tom and the floor tom both have the larger vented bass drum RB. I think you should consider keeping these RB's. You already stated that it's going to be a player's kit, so keeping these would be fine. Besides, you would have to plug the holes and purchase the smaller RB's/tacks and they can be expensive between $75 and $150 a piece.

Depending on the type of wrap you choose, you'll be looking at $250 to $300 to re-wrap all three drums. If you like the wrap color, you could just re-wrap the bass drum for about $100. The current wrap looks like Champagne Sparkle, so that might be a little difficult to find.

Thanks for posting.

The kit actually looks nice as it is. If your just going to use it for touring I personally would not go through the trouble and expense to do anything to it. You have already lost the collectors value with the extra holes and rewrap.

Do you have the post for the bass drum Tom mount? If i you do and it is a ludwig post that has a Ludwig logo, I would just swap it out with a Gilbralter or a later Ludwig post with no logo. I think it would look fine. I would look for another kit to do your wmp project. Thats a nice looking wrap on them. Looks like someone went to a lot of trouble to rewrap and fix that kit the way it is. Just my:2Cents:
