I just found this incredible footage of Buddy Rich. I'd never seen this one, thought some of you may not have either. Some great shots from above the kit.

is the second floor tom an 18" or is it an optical illusion?

I looked later on in the video and I think its the towel that's confused me

'Tis indeed an illusion! Buddy always used twin 16X16's ... and truth be told ... in the early going, he actually played the back 16X16! After he left Rogers in 1967 he started relegating the 2nd floor tom to a towel holder. Prior to that though, he played it!

That thing he did with his sticks almost vertical playing a fast single stroke roll is simply amazing. I've never seen any drummer do that, not even any of the Buddy Rich clones, he wasn't human, probably an advanced alien from a far distant drum planet.Bowing

Amazing as always. Great footage. Kit sounds stellar in his hands. Loads of life but not to ringy. Thank you for the post.

Been working on the vertical stick rim playing for years. Will take a few more. Hard but top notch fun.

Anyone know how many beat's per minute Buddy is hitting here? Must be insane.

Thanks,

Creighton

Most amazing and highly musical. You can tell the tune was running through his head all the way through that solo. Ceaseless energy in that one. The Slingy's sound great. I thought I was seeing an 18" floor tom too. Such a nice towel rack, and good thing it was there because you certainly could not have said, "No sweat Buddy."
