MIJ stencil v.2 - Gold Sparkle

Ok, before and after shots of a very neglected and abused gold sparkle set, 13/16/20. No badges, but I'm pretty sure it's of the Pearl variety, judging by the lugs. I'm very pround to have brought this set back from the dead!

As you can see the bass drum had been painted flat grey. Maybe it was for use as a 2nd bass drum for another kit because whoever did it went so far as to paint the inlays in the hoops as well. Thankfully, the rack and FT escaped without being painted...

Anyway, wet sanding all the paint off the bass drum was a long and annoying process, but I think the results were worth it.

I'm pretty happy with the sounds at this point. Emperors over Attack clear mediums on rack and FT, PS3 on bass. Nice big warm tone in the rack and bass drum, but the floor tom has some bad overtones that I'm trying to figure out. Maybe it will help when I get around to putting a muffler in it.

I still have the rail consolette and cymbal mount, but they wont be in use anytime soon, so I haven't reattached them yet. The BD hoops should probably be replaced at some point. They are wood and I had to reglue one of them as it was cracked. I'm sure that they're a little out of round. All original parts used except for new bottom rims for the rack and floor and new BD claws. The new generic claws look very similar to the old ones and the claws that came with this set were used to complete another MIJ red sparkle BD.

Nice work and your kit looks nice; I have a soft spot for the sparkles. I know you're going for a vintage look and sound, but I've found that an Evans clear hydraulic batter and G2 reso work sweet on a muffler-less FT. I (stupidly) removed the mufflers from my '75 Gretsch kit, as a kid, and have found this to be an effective way to control over-tones. That said, my FT is an 18 incher, so it's sort of like smiting a jazz kick-drum, but it sounds great. good luck.

I really like the resto. A nice kit well worth rehabilitation. Retaining the original wrap through you painstakingness is a credit to you. Always such a joy to see an old clapped out kit have some life breathed back into it. That kit must be really happy now! Well done.

With the FT overtones maybe check what they're like from a listeners point of view maybe from ten feet away, unless they're for your ears only?

Thanks for your comments. AZBill, aren't the Evans hydroulics like Remo pinstripes? I have heard pinstripes on these types of drums and wasn't very impressed. They seem to work great for modern drums, but leave something to be desired for vintage sets. I dont know if it has to do with the wood types or bearing edges, etc, but the pinstripes just didn't work for my ear. Unfortunate, since they probably would help with the overtone problem. I may try to get another coated emporer for the reso side. I've got a 14" FT that came with pretty worked in emps on both sides and it sounds pretty good. And not as dead as I would have thought.

You know, this is really interesting. I've been hearing the overtones as I've been playing it, but when a friend of mine was playing the set I couldn't really make them out. I dont know if it was a projection thing or if the overtones got lost in the mix with the cymbals and the sound of the room, but away from the drum set the overtones didn't seem to be present. Strange.
